Chapter 16 - The Architecture of Healing

With the legal storm finally cleared and the wreckage of the past swept away, the rhythm of our daily lives settled into something profound and unfamiliar: absolute peace.

The studio at Valente Design Group was buzzing with new energy. Major urban development contracts were rolling in, but for the first time, I wasn't taking them on just to prove a point or to outrun a ghost. I took them because I loved the craft—because every line drawn on my digital drafting board was an act of deliberate creation rather than defense.

On a quiet Saturday morning, Lily and I were sitting at the kitchen island, surrounded by art supplies, architectural magazines, and half-empty mugs of hot chocolate.

Lily was sketching a concept for a community greenhouse, her pencil moving across the paper with a steady, confident stroke that mirrored her inner recovery. The shadows of fear and hyper-vigilance that had haunted her eyes months ago had been replaced by a bright, resilient spark.

“What do you think, Mom?” she asked, turning the sketchbook toward me. “I added natural light panels on the roof so the plants get sunlight from every angle, even during Chicago winters.”

I looked down at the drawing, genuinely impressed by the clean geometry and thoughtful design.

“It’s brilliant, sweetie,” I said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “It’s warm, it’s functional, and it’s built to let things grow safely. You’ve got the Valente eye—minus all the toxic structural flaws.”

Lily laughed, a bright, clear sound that filled the kitchen with warmth.

“I think I’ll stick to plants and buildings,” she smiled. “People are too complicated to engineer.”

“Truer words were never spoken,” I agreed, kissing the top of her head.
