Chapter 12 - The Turning Table

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't flinch.

Instead, I reached out, slowly unzipped my leather handbag, and slid Arthur’s ledger across the polished mahogany table until it stopped right against Sterling’s pristine notepad.

Sterling frowned, glancing down at the worn, leather-bound volume stamped with the old Vance Enterprises logo.

“What is this?” he asked, his tone shifting from patronizing to cautious.

“That,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute clarity in the silent room, “is the original financial audit log of my grandfather’s estate, proving that twenty years ago, my mother and Derek forged the final codicil of the will, illegally stripped my trust fund, and systematically looted millions in property holdings that legally belonged to me.”

Sterling’s face went rigid. He reached out with two fingers and gingerly nudged the corner of the ledger open, his eyes scanning the handwritten asset distribution columns and Arthur’s meticulous accounting notes.

The confidence vanished from his eyes in a single heartbeat.

“Where did you get this?” Sterling demanded, his voice losing its smooth veneer.

“From the man who kept the books for thirty years,” I replied evenly. “And copies of these exact financial fraud documents, along with certified affidavits, were hand-delivered to the Cook County State Attorney’s economic crimes division at 9:00 a.m. this morning—twenty minutes before this deposition started.”

The young associate beside Sterling choked back a gasp. Sterling slammed the ledger shut, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at me across the table.

“You’re bluffing,” Sterling hissed, though the panic in his voice was palpable.

“Call the prosecutor’s office,” I challenged, leaning forward. “Ask them if they’re interested in a multi-million-dollar grand larceny and forgery case tied directly to the Vance family estate—a case that completely dismantles the pristine, law-abiding character of the very man you’re trying to defend in a domestic battery trial.”

Silence descended on the room. The stenographer’s fingers stopped moving entirely.

Sterling realized, with terrifying clarity, that the weapon he had intended to use to crush me had just blown up in his face.
