Three weeks later, the trial concluded with swift, unyielding justice.

Derek Vance was sentenced to six years in state prison without the possibility of early parole, given his prior history of violent offenses and the severity of the aggravated assault against a minor. “Do you think we’ll ever have to look back again?”

I looked out across the shimmering expanse of Lake Michigan, watching the skyline rise tall, proud, and perfectly aligned against the horizon.

“Never,” I said, squeezing her hand tightly. “We don't need to look back, Lily. We built something much better.”

I pulled a blank sketchbook from my tote bag, flipped it open to the pristine white paper, and picked up my pen.

The past was a collapsed structure, cleared away to make room for something permanent. And as the ink flowed smoothly across the page, I knew that whatever came next, our foundation was completely unshakeable.
