Chapter 4 - The Gold Coast Sanctuary

My new temporary home was a sunlit, furnished one-bedroom apartment on the twelfth floor of a vintage building in the Gold Coast neighborhood. It lacked the sprawling square footage of the Lincoln Park brownstone, but it had large, arched windows overlooking Lake Michigan, a cozy velvet sofa, and an overwhelming sense of sanctuary.

For the first week, I focused entirely on healing my physical body.

I followed my strict post-operative diet, eating small, nourishing broths and proteins, taking short, tentative walks along the lakefront path wrapped in a heavy wool coat, and sleeping twelve hours a night. The physical recovery was arduous; my abdominal muscles still ached with every step, reminding me daily of how close I had come to the edge.

But the mental recovery was even more profound.

Without Marcus’s critical eye, without the constant pressure to maintain appearances as the perfect surgeon’s wife at hospital charity galas and medical association dinners, I felt a strange, weightless sense of liberation. The silence in my apartment wasn't lonely; it was peaceful.

Sarah kept me updated through encrypted emails.

Three days after I left the brownstone, Sarah’s process server visited Marcus at Metropolitan General Hospital. He was handed the formal petition for dissolution of marriage.

According to Sarah, Marcus had initially attempted to contact her office in a blind panic, demanding to speak to me directly. When Sarah informed him that all communication must go through legal channels and that I was safe, unreachable, and uncompromising on the 50/50 property split, his tone had shifted from panic to indignant fury.

“She’s being irrational,” he had apparently shouted over the phone to Sarah. “She knows how demanding my schedule was with the transplant initiative! I was saving lives! This is career sabotage!”

Sarah had simply hung up on him.

He had no idea where I was living. He had no way to reach me. And for the first time in our marriage, Marcus Hayes was completely, utterly out of control.
