Chapter 14 - Closing the Loop

Before leaving Metropolitan General, I found myself standing on the seventeenth floor.

Room 1704.

The door was closed, and a nurse was quietly pushing a medication cart down the linoleum hallway. It was the exact same corridor where I had spent thirty days staring at the ceiling, waiting for a husband who was too busy celebrating himself to care whether I lived or died.

I didn't feel anger or bitterness as I stood there. I felt a profound sense of closure.

Brenda, the senior nurse who had packed my bags on the morning of my discharge, stepped out of the nurses' station and paused, her eyes widening in recognition.

“Clara?” she gasped, walking over quickly. “My goodness... look at you. You look incredible.”

I smiled, stepping forward to give her a warm hug. “I am, Brenda. I truly am.”

“We heard you took the state health audit position,” Brenda whispered, glancing down the hall with a knowing smile. “Word is, half the department heads in the city are sleeping a little less soundly knowing you’re running the compliance desk.”

“Tell them that as long as they take care of their patients, they have nothing to worry about,” I replied calmly.

We chatted for a few minutes about mutual acquaintances and hospital improvements before I walked back toward the elevators. As the car descended to the ground floor, I watched the digital floor numbers tick downward—seventeen, sixteen, fifteen... all the way to one.

Each number dropping felt like shedding another layer of the past.
