Chapter 18 - Protecting the Ledger

The silence in the sunroom grew heavy, broken only by the distant hum of traffic far down below on Lake Shore Drive.
For a brief second, a cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. All the progress I had made—the clean slate, the financial independence, the state oversight job—threatened by the lingering ghost of Marcus’s criminal greed.
Then my professional training kicked in. Panic was an amateur’s response; data was the only thing that mattered.
I walked over to my desk, picked up my encrypted tablet, and brought up the financial disclosure files from our divorce settlement.
“When Sarah and I drafted the settlement agreement,” I said, turning back to face Julian with absolute, unshakeable calm, “we didn't rely on Marcus’s word. Every single dollar transferred into my independent accounts was cross-referenced against legitimate personal savings, independent consulting fees he earned prior to the grant collusion, and unencumbered real estate equity.”
I tapped the screen, projecting the forensic breakdown onto the smart TV mounted on the wall.
“Look at Schedule C, Julian,” I instructed, pointing to the highlighted line items. “My legal team legally quarantined my settlement from his corporate grant accounts the moment we uncovered the discrepancies. The seventy percent I received came exclusively from clean, un-indicted marital assets. The federal government has no legal standing to touch it.”
Julian stared at the screen, studying the columns of figures for a long, tense minute. Slowly, the tension drained from his shoulders, and he let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.

“You audit-proofed your own divorce,” he murmured, looking up at me with a mixture of awe and disbelief.
“I verify facts, Julian,” I replied, closing the file. “Marcus thought he was the smartest surgeon in the room. He forgot that the person balancing the books always knows where the trapdoors are.”
