Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Page

Six months later, on a crisp autumn morning exactly one year after I walked out of that hospital room, I stood on the windy observation deck of the Willis Tower.
The city stretched out beneath me in every direction—a vast, beautiful, complex maze of steel, glass, and human stories.
I wore a tailored charcoal coat, my hair catching the October breeze. On my right hand, the simple silver band gleamed softly in the morning light.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out to find a text message from Sarah:
“Reservation at our favorite place tonight at 7:00 PM. Celebrating one year of absolute, unbroken freedom. Don't be late!”
I smiled, typing back a quick confirmation.
As I slipped the phone back into my pocket, I looked down at the bustling streets far below. I thought about the woman who had lain in Room 1704 a year ago—thirteen pounds underweight, terrified, betrayed, and holding onto a broken illusion of love.

If I could reach back across that year, I would tell her only one thing: Don't be afraid of the silence when they walk away. It’s just the sound of your own life finally beginning.
I turned away from the glass railing, stepped toward the elevator, and pressed the button for the lobby—ready to step out into the world and write every single remaining chapter on my own terms.
