Chapter 8 - The Arraignment

By noon, the federal district court downtown was packed to capacity. Reporters, legal bloggers, and curious onlookers crowded the oak-paneled gallery, whispering excitedly as high-profile defense attorneys scrambled through their briefcases.
The Honorable Judge Evelyn Carter presided over the docket, her expression grim as she reviewed the multi-count federal indictment.
Tessa and Morgan stood before the bench in matching orange jumpsuits, their hands cuffed in front of them. Their high-priced defense counsel was sweating profusely, frantically trying to argue for pre-trial release on bail.
“Your Honor,” the defense attorney stammered, adjusting his tie. “My clients are pillars of the local philanthropic community. The defense moves for release on personal recognizance, pending a psychological evaluation regarding community stress.”
“Save your breath, Counselor,” Judge Carter interrupted sharply, her voice echoing off the high stone ceiling. “I have reviewed the evidentiary package submitted by federal prosecutors, including certified medical trauma records from the pediatric ward and unedited digital audio-visual files captured directly from the defendants' residence.”
The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush.
“The court finds the defendants pose an extreme flight risk, a severe danger to the community, and a direct threat to juvenile safety,” Judge Carter declared, striking her gavel with a resounding thud. “Bail is denied. Defendants are remanded to federal custody without exception, pending immediate trial.”
As the federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel cuffs tighter and guiding Tessa and Morgan toward the secure holding doors behind the judge’s bench, Morgan let out a strangled, desperate sob that echoed through the silent courtroom.
They had spent their entire lives believing that money, social standing, and expensive lawyers could shield them from consequence.
