Chapter 12 - Closing the Uniform Chapter

A month after our relocation, I drove down to the regional military reserve headquarters to officially finalize my transition out of active service.
Major Vance—my commanding officer, who had authorized the domestic extraction unit and stood by me through the darkest hours of the ordeal—was waiting in his private office. When I walked in, wearing my full Class-A service uniform for the final time, he stood up and saluted sharply.
I returned the salute, crisp and formal, before shaking his hand across the desk.
“Are you sure about this, Captain?” Vance asked, gesturing to the retirement and discharge paperwork resting neatly in front of him. “The Department of Defense offered you a direct promotion and a staff position at the Pentagon last week. You’ve got one of the sharpest operational minds in logistics.”
“I know, Major,” I replied, sitting down and picking up the pen. “And I’m grateful for every year I wore the uniform. It taught me discipline, endurance, and how to spot a threat a mile away.”
I looked down at the discharge orders.
“But my most important assignment is waiting for me at home,” I added, looking up with a steady smile. “I spent years protecting logistics networks and tactical supply lines. Now, I want to spend every single day protecting my daughter’s childhood.”
Vance nodded slowly, a warm, understanding expression softening his weathered features. He knew the cost of the life we left behind.

“Understood, Captain Vance,” he said softly, signing the bottom of the clearance document. “Consider your deployment officially completed. Welcome home.”
