Chapter 17 - Closing the Case Files

The final official notification from the federal prosecutor’s office arrived on a crisp Tuesday morning in a thick, unassuming manila envelope.
I sat at the kitchen counter with a cup of black coffee, slicing open the seal. Inside were the final disposition records confirming that the federal prison sentences for Tessa and Morgan had been fully processed and locked into maximum-security facilities with no possibility of parole or early appeal. Their remaining corporate assets had been entirely liquidated, and the proceeds permanently redirected into a state-managed victim advocacy and child protection fund.
Ryan’s name appeared only once, at the bottom of a compliance document noting that his court-ordered child support payments were being automatically deducted from his distant, anonymous salary and placed into a secure college trust for Elise.
There was no sense of triumph or lingering vengeance as I read through the pages. Just a profound, clean sense of finality. The storm had passed, the wreckage had been cleared, and the ground beneath us was smooth, solid, and secure.
