Chapter 14 - Shadows in the Rearview

Decades of bad habits don't vanish overnight, and neither do legal nightmares, even when federal indictments lock the primary culprits away.

In early December, a certified letter arrived in our mailbox bearing a legal return address from downtown Chicago.

I sat at our kitchen counter after Elise had gone up to bed, carefully slicing open the envelope. It was a formal notice from the bankruptcy liquidators handling the complete dissolution of Vance, Sterling & Croft and the forced auction of Tessa and Morgan’s multi-million-dollar estate on Shoreline Drive.

With the federal racketeering convictions secured and civil asset forfeiture laws applied, every single cent of illicit wealth, hidden bank accounts, and corporate holdings had been seized by the federal government. Tessa and Morgan were currently serving twenty-year federal penitentiary sentences without the possibility of parole in separate maximum-security facilities across the Midwest.

Ryan, having signed away his parental rights and cooperated with federal investigators, had quietly relocated to a distant state, working an anonymous, low-wage job to pay court-mandated restitution.

I read through the final legal paragraph, noting the finality of the stamps and seals.

The empire they had built on lies, intimidation, and cruelty had been reduced to ash. Not a single trace of their toxic influence remained.

I folded the paper, slid it back into the envelope, and tossed it directly into the recycling bin beneath the sink. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel triumph. I just felt clean.
