Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the ICU

Back at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the sterile quiet of the third floor offered a stark contrast to the violence raging across the city.

I had left a rotating guard detail of six armed men outside Clara’s room, giving explicit orders that no one—not a doctor, not a nurse, not even the hospital administrator—was to enter without my direct, verbal authorization.

When I pushed open the door to Room 412, the room was dimly lit by a single bedside lamp.

Clara was still unconscious, her face bruised and pale against the pristine white pillows. A heart monitor ticked away at a slow, steady cadence.

I pulled a chair close to the bed, sat down, and gently took her uninjured hand in mine. Her skin felt cool, fragile, and heartbreakingly delicate.

“I’m sorry, agape mou,” I whispered, pressing her knuckles against my forehead. “I let the world creep in. I let poison into our house. But I’m burning it all down for you, Clara. Every last piece of it.”

As if hearing my voice, a faint, imperceptible tremor ran through her fingers.

Her eyelids fluttered, struggling against the heavy sedation. Slowly, agonizingly, her dark hazel eyes opened, staring hazily at the ceiling before shifting toward me.

“Dom...?” Her voice was barely a dry, cracked breath.

“I’m here,” I choked out, a wave of overwhelming emotion breaking through the cold, calculated armor I had worn all night. “I’m right here, sweetheart.”

Clara tried to move, wincing as pain flared across her ribs, but her eyes locked onto mine with a piercing, lucid intensity.

“The car... the truck...” she whispered, tears slipping down her bruised cheeks. “It wasn't an accident, Dom. They wanted... they wanted to kill me.”

“I know,” I said, my jaw tightening as a fresh wave of rage surged through my chest. “I know who did it. And by sunrise, Moretti won't have an empire left to hide behind.”
