Chapter 5 - The War Council

I straightened up slowly, adjusting my cuffs.

Serena was hyperventilating now, sobbing hysterically, clutching at my sleeve as I stood to leave. “Dom! Please! You love me! You said you weren't going anywhere! Please don't leave me here!”

I looked down at her hand clutching my coat sleeve as if it were a diseased appendage. With my free hand, I slowly, deliberately peeled her fingers away one by one.

“I lied,” I said coldly.

I walked out of the room, locking the door from the outside with a heavy steel padlock my men had brought up from the basement.

“Mateo!” I barked the second I stepped into the hallway.

“Boss?”

“Get every captain, every soldier, and every weapon we have in the city on red alert. Call an emergency summit at the warehouse on Goose Island in one hour.”

Mateo’s eyes widened. “Goose Island? Boss, that’s an act of open war against Moretti. If we move on them without warning—.”

“Warning?” I cut him off, a dark, humorless laugh escaping my lips. “Moretti just tried to murder my wife using information leaked from inside my own bed. The war started the second his truck hit Clara’s car.”

I turned toward the stairs leading back down to the ICU, my heart heavy with grief, but my mind sharpened to a razor’s edge.

“Gather the men,” I commanded, my voice echoing down the corridor like rolling thunder. “We’re going to burn the South Side to ash, and then I’m going to personally rip Lorenzo Moretti’s heart out of his chest.”
