Chapter 3 - The Digital Trail of Betrayal

The screen of Clara’s phone was a spiderweb of shattered glass, but the internal OLED display still functioned, casting a pale, ghostly light across my face in the dim waiting room.
Mateo had already unlocked it using her biometric backup—a protocol we installed on all family devices for security reasons. He tapped open the messaging app and handed it back to me.
My eyes scanned the chat log.
The most recent conversation was at 10:45 PM—just twenty minutes before the crash.
It was an exchange between Clara and an unknown local number.
Unknown: "If you want to know where your husband actually spends his Tuesday nights instead of 'working late at the club,' check the parking lot of the Azure Lounge on 47th and State. Bring your car. Come alone."
My breath hitched. The Azure Lounge was a notorious Moretti-owned watering hole deep in South Side territory—a wretched hive of vice, narcotics, and mafia meetings.
Clara’s reply, sent three minutes later, shattered my soul into fine dust:
Clara: "Who is this? Stop playing games."
Unknown: "Not a game, Mrs. Valente. I’m looking at him right now sitting in a booth with a blonde girl half his age. Drive down here and see for yourself. Or are you too scared to face the truth?"
Followed by a single attached image file.
My thumb hovered over the screen, terrified to tap it, yet irresistibly drawn to the executioner's block. I pressed the screen.
The image expanded.
It was a candid, high-resolution photograph taken from across a dimly lit room.
In the booth sat me—Dominic Valente—laughing, my hand casually resting on Serena Hayes’s bare shoulder inside a private VIP booth at the Azure Lounge.
Except I had never taken Serena to the Azure Lounge. We had been at an upscale lounge in River North five miles away.
Someone had taken an old photo, or digitally manipulated a recent one, splicing me and Serena into a Moretti-controlled club on the South Side, and weaponized it against my wife.
They had baited a trap. They knew Clara’s jealous instincts, her fierce loyalty, and her desperate need for the truth would override her common sense. They knew she would get in her car, panic-stricken and heartbroken, and drive straight into a slaughterhouse.
“Boss...” Mateo’s voice sounded miles away. “Who had access to that photo? Who knew where you were with Serena tonight?”
The answer hit me with the force of a freight train.

Only one person in the entire world had been sitting at the table next to us at the River North lounge tonight, snapping pictures on her phone under the guise of “documenting our wild night out.”
Serena.
