Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Chapter

The sun rose over Lake Michigan on a brilliant, crisp autumn morning, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and rose gold.

I stood on the balcony of our penthouse, holding a mug of black coffee, watching the golden light sweep across the towering skyline of Chicago.

Inside, I could hear the soft, melodic sound of Clara moving about the kitchen, humming a quiet tune as she prepared breakfast. There were no armed guards standing outside our door, no criminal syndicates plotting my downfall, and no ghosts lurking in the corners of our home.

We had walked through the deepest, most destructive fires imaginable—from the ruthless, bloody asphalt of the South Side to the sterile, terrifying corridors of Northwestern Memorial Hospital—and we had come out the other side reborn.

The past was locked away in a vault that would never be opened again. The future stretched out before us like one of Clara’s sunlit canvases, clean, bright, and waiting to be painted.
