Chapter 8 - Packing Up Paradise

The next thirty minutes were a masterclass in humiliating defeat.
Through the security cameras, I watched the grand family vacation come to a sputtering, miserable end.
Kyle scrambled around the property like a frantic squirrel, loading coolers, inflatable pool toys, and designer luggage back into the trunk of the SUV while muttering curses under his breath. Tyler and Chloe looked shell-shocked, wandering around the driveway in their swim trunks and flip-flops, wondering why they never even got to touch the infinity pool.
Melissa stood by the passenger door, arms crossed tightly over her chest, glaring up at the second-floor windows as if she expected me to magically appear behind the glass like a cartoon villain.
And Mom? Mom didn't say a single word. She allowed Kyle to help her into the front seat, her head bowed, her immaculate illusion of maternal power lying shattered across the gravel drive.
At exactly 10:15 AM, the SUV’s engine roared to life.
Kyle threw the car into reverse, spitting gravel across the immaculate landscaping, and peeled out of the driveway without looking back.
As the tail-lights disappeared around the bend of the coastal road, I let out a long, quiet breath.
The porch was empty. The driveway was silent.
I picked up my phone, opened the property management app, and changed the system status back to Available for Executive Leasing. Within twenty minutes, an automated notification popped up: an executive staging team from a major tech firm in Atlanta had just booked the property for the upcoming week at the standard rate of $4,000.

Business, as they say, was booming.
