Chapter 20 - The Unlocked Door

On a bright, freezing Saturday afternoon in mid-December, I drove out to inspect The Hawthorne Estate one last time before the holiday break.

The property was entirely booked through the New Year by a visiting executive board from a major international tech conglomerate.

I walked up the newly constructed cedar steps, unlocked the heavy oak front door with a quick tap of my master administrative app, and stepped inside. The foyer was warm, fragrant with the scent of cedar and clean polish, and humming with quiet executive efficiency.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows of the main parlor, looking out at the historic street below.

Seven months ago, I had sat in my bedroom staring at a cruel text message from my mother while my family reveled in their entitlement, expecting my labor and my money to finance their paradise. They had tried to lock me out of a vacation I paid for, believing they held all the power.

They had forgotten the most fundamental rule of real estate, and of life:

You can try to exclude whoever you want from your journey. But you can never lock the owner out of a house she built with her own hands.

May you like

I pulled out my phone, checked the master dashboard, and watched as all system statuses flashed green across the board—secure, optimized, and fully operational.

I smiled, slipping my phone back into my pocket, and locked the door behind me as I stepped back out into the crisp winter air. Every key was in my hand. Every door was wide open. And every single sunrise ahead belonged entirely to me.
