Chapter 18 - The Grand Reopening

By late November, the Victorian property—now officially named The Hawthorne Estate—was completely finished.
What had once been a decaying, dusty relic of the past was now a stunning, high-end corporate guest house, featuring polished hardwood floors, modern minimalist furnishings, and smart-home technology integrated seamlessly into historic architecture.
To celebrate its completion, I hosted an intimate evening reception for my core business partners, contractors, and local real estate colleagues.
The rooms were filled with the soft hum of conversation, clinking crystal glasses, and the warm glow of recessed lighting. Liam stood by the restored brick fireplace, discussing structural engineering with a local developer, while Chloe mingled with our primary tech-leasing liaisons.
As I walked through the main parlor holding a glass of sparkling water, Marcus—a senior executive from our corporate relocation network—stepped up beside me with a wide grin.
“Clara, I’ve seen a lot of property transformations in my career, but what you’ve done with this place is nothing short of a masterpiece,” Marcus said, raising his glass. “How do you manage to spot potential in places everyone else gave up on?”
I smiled, looking around the vibrant, breathing space that had risen from months of hard work and uncompromising standards.
“You just have to look past the surface,” I replied, looking out the large double-hung windows toward the street. “People get blinded by old paint, rot, and bad foundations. But if the core is sound and you’re willing to put in the heavy lifting to clear out what’pecs broken, you can build something extraordinary.”
“To uncompromising standards,” Marcus toasted, tapping his glass against mine.
May you like
“To foundations built to last,” I answered softly.
