Chương 7 - Breach on the TarmacThe white aluminum security arm shattered against the hood of my Mercedes like a toothpick, sending shards of plastic spinning into the grey morning air.

Alarms shrieked instantly. Flashing yellow lights erupted from the security guard shack as two airport police cruisers scrambled across the tarmac, their sirens wailing a chaotic chorus against the roar of jet engines.

I didn't stop. I slammed on the brakes, sending the car sliding sideways in a wide circle before parking it directly across the path of a Gulfstream G650 parked on the private apron.

The jet’s massive turbine engines were already whining, spinning at high idle, preparing to detach from the loading bridge.

I killed the engine, threw open the door, and stepped out onto the wet asphalt just as a freezing wind whipped across the open airfield. The blast of air from the jet wash nearly knocked me off balance, stinging my eyes with dust and exhaust.

“Sir! Stop right there! Put your hands behind your head!”

Two airport police officers leaped out of their cruisers, service weapons drawn, sprinting toward me across the open tarmac.

I ignored them. I ignored the shouts, the guns, and the flashing red-and-blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement. My eyes were locked entirely on the rolling stairs attached to the Gulfstream’s cabin door.

Grace had just reached the top of the stairs.

She was holding little Leo in her arms, his small red raincoat bright against the steel and white fuselage of the jet. A nurse was helping the two little girls up the steps behind her.

Just as Grace turned to guide Leo through the cabin door, a gust of wind caught her dark hair. She glanced down across the tarmac—and froze.

Her eyes met mine through the swirling exhaust fumes.

I started sprinting across the open concrete, holding up my hands just enough to show the approaching police officers that I wasn't armed, while shouting at the top of my lungs.

“Grace! Stop the plane!”

“Sir, I’m warning you! Get on the ground!” one of the officers bellowed, grabbing my shoulder and spinning me around with professional, crushing force.

I didn't fight him, but I didn't stop shouting. I twisted my arm free, locked eyes with Grace on the airplane stairs, and yelled the only thing I knew would pierce through her armor.

“I KNOW ABOUT THE MARROW, GRACE! YOU CAN'T RUN FROM ME WHEN HE NEEDS ME!”

The words hung suspended in the deafening roar of the jet engines.

On the top of the stairs, Grace’s body went completely rigid. The color vanished from her face. She pulled Leo tighter against her chest, her knuckles turning white against his coat. For a terrifying second, I thought she was going to turn and rush inside the cabin.

Instead, she whispered something to the flight attendant standing in the doorway, handed Leo over safely, and then—to the absolute shock of everyone on the tarmac—turned around and slowly walked back down the metal steps.

The police officer holding my arm blinked, lowering his gun slightly as he looked between Grace approaching us and my expensive tailored suit.

“Mr. Sterling?” the officer muttered, recognizing my face from Forbes magazine profiles or local business boards. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Doing what I should have done three years ago,” I breathed, shaking off his grip and walking past him toward the base of the stairs.

Grace reached the bottom step, standing on the tarmac just a few feet away from me. Her eyes were blazing with a cold, terrifying fury, yet her chin quivered with a raw, exhausted vulnerability.

“You lunatic,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You absolute, arrogant bastard. You broke past airport security just to yell about medical records across a tarmac?”

“I broke past security because my son is dying, Grace,” I answered, my voice dropping into a raw, quiet intensity that silenced the howling wind around us. “And you were going to fly to Boston without ever letting me try to save him.”
