Chương 17 - The First Steps OutsideTwo weeks passed in a blur of sterile corridors, medical charts, daily blood panels, and the slow, agonizing, yet miraculous recovery of a four-year-old boy.

By the fourteenth day, the pediatric oncology team at Massachusetts General cleared Leo to leave the sterile isolation ward and take his first supervised walk down the sunlit hospital atrium.

It was a crisp Saturday morning in Boston. The autumn sun streamed through the three-story glass windows of the hospital lobby, casting long, golden shafts of light across the polished terrazzo floor.

I walked beside Leo’s rolling IV pole, my hand resting gently on his shoulder, while Grace walked on his other side, holding his small hand. The twin girls skipped ahead, laughing as they chased floating dust motes in the sunbeams.

Leo stopped walking near a large glass planter filled with green ferns, looking up outside at the busy street below.

“Daddy?” he asked, using the word so naturally it still sent a jolt of electric warmth straight to my chest.

“Yeah, buddy?” I crouched down beside him.

“Can we go to a park when I’m all better? Like a real park with swings and grass?”

I looked up, catching Grace’s gaze over the top of Leo’s head. Her eyes were shining with unshed tears, but her lips were curved into a soft, beautiful smile.

“We can go to any park you want, Leo,” I promised, my voice thick with emotion. “We can go anywhere in the world.”

For the first time in three years, the ghosts of our past felt like they were finally losing their grip, replaced by the fragile, golden architecture of a future we were building together from the ashes.
