Chương 11 - The Needle and the Dawn

The fluorescent lights of the eighth-floor diagnostic lab at Massachusetts General hummed with a sterile, relentless frequency.

It was 6:55 AM. Five minutes before my scheduled blood draw and genetic tissue typing.

I sat alone on the edge of a examination table, wearing a blue hospital gown that felt entirely too thin against the morning chill of the room. My mind wasn't racing anymore; it had settled into a strange, hollow clarity. For the first time in my thirty-eight years, my success, my corporate title, my bank accounts, and my prestigious pedigree meant less than nothing. All of that power evaporated against the sharp edge of a stainless-steel syringe.

The door clicked open, and Dr. Evans walked in carrying a metal tray lined with vials, cotton swabs, and a vacuum-sealed collection tube.

“Good morning, Mr. Sterling,” Dr. Evans said, his voice professional and devoid of unnecessary bedside cheer. “Ready to get started?”

“Do it,” I replied, extending my right arm, turning the inner forearm upward, and clenching my fist to make the veins prominent.

The cold sting of an alcohol swab hit my skin, followed immediately by the sharp, burning bite of the needle sliding into my vein. I watched dark red blood pulse through the clear plastic tubing, filling the first vial, then the second.

Each vial represented a ticket. A lottery ticket on whether I could buy back my own soul by saving my son’s life.

“That’s everything for the genetic panel and matching markers,” Dr. Evans said smoothly as he taped a small cotton ball over the puncture site. “The lab will rush the HLA-typing sequence. We should have definitive compatibility results by early afternoon.”

“How long does it take to process a direct marrow harvest if I am a match?” I asked, keeping my voice dead steady.

Dr. Evans paused, looking at me with a new, guarded respect in his eyes. “If you’re a match, Mr. Sterling... we can take you into surgery as early as tomorrow morning. Leo’s counts are hanging on by a thread. We don't have days to waste.”

“Then let’s pray I’m a match,” I whispered.
