We were all out on the back patio. Lily had set up her heavy brass telescope near the towering sunflower, adjusting the focus knob with practiced precision. Mark sat on the corduroy sectional with a cup of evening tea, while I leaned against the wooden railing, watching the night unfold.
“Grandpa, come look!” Lily called out, waving her hand excitedly. “I found the Big Dipper!”

“You found it, kiddo,” I smiled, looking over at her bright, eager face. “Right where it’s always been.”
Lily beamed, stepping back so Mark could take a look. As Mark peered through the telescope, Lily turned around and leaned back against my legs, her small hands resting comfortably in her pockets.
I looked down at her, then past her to my son, who was looking up from the telescope with a quiet, profound peace in his eyes.
