Chapter 18 - The Summer SolsticeThree hundred and sixty-five days had passed since the day the camera caught the truth.

To mark the anniversary of that turning point, Mark didn't throw a grand party or invite a crowd of neighbors. Instead, he kept it simple. Just the three of us.

On the evening of the summer solstice—the longest, brightest day of the year—we packed a wicker basket with sandwiches, fruit, and a thermos of iced tea, and drove out to a quiet state park just outside the city limits where the horizon stretched wide and unobstructed.

We laid a thick plaid blanket out on the grass as the sun began its slow, majestic descent, painting the western sky in brilliant strokes of gold, crimson, and violet.

Lily lay flat on her back on the blanket, staring up at the darkening expanse above, while Mark and I sat cross-legged beside her, sharing a quiet sandwich.

“Look!” Lily pointed suddenly, her finger tracing a bright arc across the sky. “The first star.”

Mark looked up, smiling softly. “Do you know what star that is, kiddo?”

“Polaris,” Lily answered instantly. “The North Star. It stays still while everything else moves around it.”

“That’s right,” Mark murmured, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. “It’s the one you can always count on to find your way home.”

I watched them together under the expanding canopy of summer stars. I thought about the broken rules, the silent suffering, the cold minimalism of the past, and the messy, beautiful reality we had built to replace it. We hadn't just survived a crisis; we had redesigned our lives from the ground up, making sure every joint, every beam, and every connection was built to last.
