Chapter 17 - Whispers of the PastEven when gossip dies down, echoes sometimes linger in quiet corners.

A week later, I stopped by the local hardware store to pick up some replacement hinges for the back gate. While waiting at the register, I overheard two women whispering near the seasonal aisle.
“...can you believe she’s living back in Houston with her sister? Apparently, her social circle completely dropped her after what happened at that birthday party...”
“Well, what do you expect? Trying to frame a nine-year-old child just to cover up breaking her own expensive decoration? That’s not just snobby, that’s outright cruel...”
I didn't turn around. I didn't need to join their conversation, nor did I feel any anger toward the chatter. The community had seen the truth, and Vanessa’s carefully curated reputation had shattered long before the crystal horse ever hit the hardwood floor.
When the cashier handed me my change, I walked out into the warm afternoon sunshine, climbed into my truck, and drove straight back to Mark’s house.
When I walked through the front door, the house was filled with the sound of laughter. Mark and Lily were sitting at the kitchen island, elbow-deep in poster board, markers, and glitter as they worked on a history project about space exploration.
“Welcome back, stranger,” Mark looked up, a pencil tucked behind his ear. “Did you get the hinges?”
“Got them right here,” I said, setting the bag on the counter. I looked at Lily, who was meticulously drawing a tiny rocket ship next to a cardboard Saturn. “How’s the mission to Mars coming along?”

“We’re launching tomorrow,” Lily declared seriously.
I smiled, feeling a deep, abiding warmth settle in my chest. The whispers outside didn't matter. The only voices that mattered were right here in this room, safe, warm, and heard.
