Chapter 7 - The Ghost of the Past

Twenty years ago, my father—Arthur’s older brother, Julian Vanderbilt—was the actual genius behind Vanderbilt Enterprises. He built the proprietary logistics algorithms that made the company a titan. But Julian was too honest for the corporate sharks. When he discovered that Arthur and his inner circle were systematically laundering money through offshore dummy corporations, my father threatened to go to the federal authorities.

Three days later, Julian Vanderbilt died in a “tragic” single-car crash on a deserted stretch of highway.

The police report called it driver fatigue. My mother called it murder, but she was a quiet, unassuming music teacher with no money and no lawyers. Within a month, Arthur had frozen our accounts, evicted us from our home, and systematically erased Julian’s name from the company history books.

When my mother died of a stress-induced stroke five years later, she left me one thing: a safety deposit box key and a battered, leather-bound journal containing every single wire transfer receipt, signed confession letter, and original patent draft my father had left behind.

I hadn't spent the last ten years working corporate temp jobs because I had to. I spent them earning a master’s degree in forensic accounting and corporate law—specifically to crack every single vault Arthur Vanderbilt owned.
