Chapter 16 - The Courtroom Verdict

The federal district courtroom was filled to the absolute brim. Reporters, journalists, and former business associates packed the wooden benches, all eager to witness the final chapter of the Vanderbilt corporate corruption trial.

Judge Katherine Vance sat behind the high mahogany bench, her expression stern and resolute.

At the defense table, Arthur Vanderbilt looked like a shadow of his former self. His bespoke tuxedo was replaced by an orange inmate jumpsuit, his silver hair uncombed, his arrogant posture completely broken. Beside him, Evelyn sat with her head buried in her hands, weeping softly into a tissue.

“Case number 2026-CR-9921, the United States versus Arthur Vanderbilt and co-conspirators,” the bailiff announced loudly.

Judge Sterling looked down from the bench, her gaze sweeping across the courtroom before landing squarely on Arthur.

“The jury has returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all counts of grand-scale wire fraud, corporate racketeering, securities manipulation, and the deliberate obstruction of justice,” Judge Sterling announced, her voice echoing clearly through the hushed room. “Arthur Vanderbilt, the court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. All remaining personal and corporate assets are subject to immediate and total forfeiture for victim restitution.”

A low gasp rippled through the gallery. Arthur slumped forward against the defense table, his hands trembling as he stared blindly at the polished wood. The empire he had built on betrayal, theft, and a brother’s blood had finally collapsed into absolute nothingness.
