Chapter 13 - The New Boardroom

By the following Monday, the top-floor executive boardroom of Vanderbilt Enterprises looked entirely different.

The heavy mahogany doors remained wide open. The portraits of Arthur Vanderbilt and his corrupt associates had been unceremoniously unhooked from the wood-paneled walls, leaving pale, rectangular outlines against the wallpaper.

I sat at the head of the massive glass conference table wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit—far removed from the scratchy catering uniform I had worn a week ago.

Marcus Vance, who had now transitioned from Mark Bennett’s estate lawyer to my primary corporate counsel, slid a stack of restructured asset transfers across the polished surface.

“The federal receivership has officially cleared all remaining structural hurdles, Elena,” Marcus said, offering a warm, approving smile. “The secondary subsidiaries have been liquidated to pay back the defrauded investors, and your father’s original patent portfolio is fully re-registered under your independent trust.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling New York skyline. “How are the restructuring negotiations with the regional tech partners going?”

“They’re eager to work with us,” Vance chuckled. “They know the new leadership actually honors contracts instead of burying them.”
