Chapter 16 - THE SECOND RACE AGAINST TIME

The thunderous roar of military helicopter rotors rattled the glass skylights as elite tactical units rappelled down into the grand foyer, securing Lucas and the remaining mercenaries. But inside the mansion, a new crisis erupted.

Emma’s face was rapidly swelling, her small lips turning a dangerous shade of blue. Her breath came in short, desperate gasps.

Alejandro instantly realized what had happened. During the chaos on the staircase, when Lucas fired near her head, dust from the crumbling wall wasn't the only thing that had coated Emma’s face—Lucas had carried crushed peanut residue on his clothes and hands from his earlier attempt to poison her. Exposure to the severe allergen had triggered a violent, secondary anaphylactic attack.

"Medical kit! NOW!" Alejandro screamed, lifting Emma into his arms.

A tactical medic rushed forward, rummaging through his field pack, only to look up in sheer horror. "Sir, the fall from the helicopter damaged our emergency epinephrine vials! They're shattered!"

"Then we drive," Alejandro barked, his voice laced with pure desperation.

The blizzard raged violently outside, making air transport impossible. Alejandro carried Emma out to his armored SUV, slamming the door shut as Elena dragged herself into the passenger seat beside them.

"Hold on, Emma! Stay with me!" Alejandro shouted over the roar of the engine as he slammed his foot onto the accelerator.

Her heart had stopped.
