Chapter 13 - THE THREAD OF MADNESS"You..." Lucas hissed, his voice trembling with rage as he looked from the green screens back to the tiny girl standing beside the console. "It was you all along."
He stepped into the room, kicking the door shut behind him. In his right hand, he held a sleek silver revolver.
"A four-year-old maid's brat," Lucas laughed bitterly, a horrific, unhinged sound that made Emma’s blood run cold. "You ruined a five-year plan. You saved Alejandro from the poison, you survived the peanut candy, and now you unlocked his fortress."
Emma backed up against the console desk, her small hands clutching her plush thỏ against her chest. "Uncle Alejandro is going to stop you!"
"Uncle Alejandro is locked in a vault, little girl!" Lucas roared, taking a threatening step forward. "And without this flash drive, he can't stop anything."
Lucas lunged forward, reaching out his arm to grab the silver drive from the console.
Emma acted on pure instinct. Remembering the lessons her mother taught her about self-defense, she grabbed a heavy brass paperweight from the desk and slammed it down onto Lucas’s outstretched hand with all her strength.
"AAGH!" Lucas shrieked, stumbling back as the heavy brass crushed his fingers.
Emma didn't wait. She ducked under his arm, zipped her backpack, and sprinted out of the security room as fast as her little legs could carry her, lao straight into the labyrinthine service corridors of the second floor.
"GET BACK HERE!" Lucas screamed, clutching his swollen fingers as he gave chase into the hallway.
The mansion was now a battleground of alarm sirens and flashing lights. Automated turrets were engaging mercenary squads in the main halls, creating an uproar of gunfire and screaming.

Emma ran through the dim servant passages, her heart pounding against her ribs. She needed to get back to the vault. She needed to tell Uncle Alejandro that the power was back on.
As she rounded the corner near the grand staircase, a heavy hand reached out from a side door and grabbed her by the hood of her jacket, hauling her off her feet.
