Chapter 17 - The Council of ShadowsThe grand ballroom of the Westchester estate glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, filled with fifty of the most powerful men and women in the eastern syndicate.

When Dominic and I descended the curved marble staircase together, the murmurs and chatter died down instantly into absolute, reverent silence. Every capo, regional boss, and trusted advisor bowed their heads as we walked past.

We took our seats at the raised mahogany dais at the head of the room. Isabella sat to my right, her eyes shining with pride, while Enzo stood sentinel by the double doors.

Dominic didn't give a long, booming speech. He stood up, raised his crystal flute of champagne, and looked out over the sea of attentive faces.

“Six months ago, an enemy tried to strike at the heart of this family,” Dominic’s voice rang out clear and cold across the silent hall. “They believed we were vulnerable. They believed our foundations could be shaken.”

He turned his head slightly, his eyes resting on me for a long, meaningful beat before looking back at the room.

“They were wrong. This family is stronger, sharper, and more unified than it has ever been. And every decision made in this house flows through two pairs of hands—mine, and my wife’s.”

A chorus of glass clinks echoed through the ballroom as the entire council raised their flutes in unison.

“To the Rossi family,” a senior capo shouted from the front table.

“To the family,” the room answered as one.

Sitting there under the blinding light of the chandeliers, surrounded by killers, politicians, and billionaires who would tear each other apart for a scrap of territory, I felt no fear. I belonged here. Not because I was trapped by a ring or forced into a cage, but because I had carved my own throne out of the wreckage of my past.
