Chapter 16 - The Coronation of WinterWith Victor Costa locked away in a maximum-security federal black site and his remaining syndicates dismantled or absorbed, the underworld wars that had bloodied the streets of New York finally fell into a profound, chilling silence.

No one dared cross the Rossi name. And no one ever questioned the woman who wore Dominic’s ring.

By early December, a heavy winter blanket had settled over the Westchester estate, turning the manicured lawns and towering oak trees into a breathtaking, frost-kissed landscape. Inside the mansion, preparations were underway for a formal gala—not a corporate masquerade like the one at the Aster Crown, but an intimate gathering of the family’s inner council and regional capos to formally introduce me as the undisputed co-ruler of the empire.

I stood in front of the grand walk-in closet of the master suite, staring at the floor-length mirror. Clara had laid out a stunning, deep crimson velvet gown that hugged my silhouette, accented by diamond-encrusted drop earrings Isabella had gifted me that morning.

The jagged scar on my right shoulder was completely hidden beneath the fabric, but I could still feel the phantom warmth of where the bullets had pierced my flesh months ago. That girl—the exhausted, desperate waitress dodging rent and medical bills—felt like a lifetime away.

The heavy oak door opened behind me, and Dominic stepped into the room. He was wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his broad shoulders filling out the jacket with effortless authority. He stopped dead in his tracks, his slate-gray eyes locking onto my reflection in the mirror.

“Breathtaking,” Dominic murmured, his voice a low, rough caress as he walked up behind me. He placed his hands gently on my bare shoulders, his fingers resting just above the collarbone.

I leaned back against his solid chest, looking up into his eyes through the glass. “Are you sure you want to introduce me to every capo and enforcer in the tri-state area as your equal, Dominic? They might expect a monster. They might be disappointed to find a former waitress.”

Dominic’s hands tightened slightly, turning me around so I was facing him directly.

“They don't want a monster, Elena,” Dominic said, his gaze burning with fierce, absolute devotion. “They want a queen who has survived the fire. When they look at you, they don't see a waitress. They see the woman who stopped a bullet for my mother and brought an empire to its knees.”

He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a velvet box, and clicked it open. Inside rested a heavy, antique platinum necklace set with raw, blood-red rubies—an heirloom passed down through three generations of Rossi matriarchs.

“Wear it,” Dominic whispered, lifting the necklace and fastening it gently around my throat. “Let them know whose blood runs through this house.”
