Chapter 6 - The Aftershocks of Fall

The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 3B swung shut with a dull, echoing thud, sealing the fate of the Vance dynasty.

Outside on the courthouse steps, the winter wind whipped savagely through the canyon of downtown buildings, carrying a flurry of dry, biting snow. But as I stepped out into the daylight, flanked by Detective Voss and Bridget Colton, the biting cold didn't sting the way it used to. The icy grip that had held my chest since the night in the alley was gone, replaced by a fierce, steady warmth.

A wall of camera flashes blinded us instantly. Microphones were thrust forward like lances, and reporters shouted over one another in a chaotic frenzy.

“Ms. Vance! Is it true your parents embezzled municipal funds?”“Did Apex Holdings finance the city council campaigns?”“Do you have a comment on your family’s arrest?”

I paused at the top of the granite steps. I looked out over the sea of lenses, taking a slow, deep breath of the crisp air. For years, I had been the invisible ghost of the family—the daughter pushed into the dark, silenced and discredited. Now, the spotlight was entirely mine, and I wasn't hiding anymore.

“My family built an empire on the assumption that power means cruelty and that wealth can buy absolute immunity,” I spoke into the cluster of microphones, my voice clear, steady, and unwavering. “They were wrong. No matter how deep you bury the truth, or how carefully you try to paint the victim as broken, the foundation built on lies will always collapse.”

I stepped down into the waiting black sedan, leaving the media circus behind.
