Chapter 17 - A Letter from the PastThe morning after the grand opening, a small, unassuming manila envelope sat inside my personal mailbox at the downtown office. There was no return address, just neat, precise handwriting bearing a federal prison postmark.

It wasn't from my mother this time.

I sat at my desk, slit the envelope open with a silver letter opener, and pulled out a single sheet of lined paper.

“Tessa,

I don't expect you to reply, nor do I deserve your forgiveness. I am writing this from the prison library, where I have finally had time to read the financial audits and the foundation reports.

While serving my sentence, I watched Emma struggle through her probation. She blames everyone but herself, much like I used to. It broke my heart to realize that the toxic legacy I worked so hard to build was the very instrument that destroyed my family.

You didn't just survive what we did to you, Tessa. You built an empire of your own—not on corruption and cruelty, but on protection and justice. I am profoundly, bitterly sorry for every tear I caused you.

— Arthur Vance.”

I stared at the paper for a long, quiet moment.

There was no sudden surge of vindication, nor any lingering sting of resentment. The man who had turned his back on me in the hallway was gone, replaced by a broken old prisoner coming to terms with the ashes of his own making.

I folded the letter neatly, placed it back into the envelope, and slid it into the bottom drawer of my desk. Some chapters don't require an answer. They simply need to be closed.
