Chapter 16 - The Grand Opening

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first Aegis Development Group community complex was a brilliant, sun-drenched Saturday morning event.
Unlike the exclusive, high-society galas my parents used to throw—affairs built on shallow alliances, hidden debt, and performative luxury—this gathering was filled with genuine warmth, laughter, and resilience. Over two hundred community advocates, legal partners, survivors from the Sovereign Shield Network, and local city officials crowded into the landscaped central courtyard.
I stood near the podium, wearing a tailored cream blazer and dark trousers, watching children play safely on the green lawn while their mothers chatted with our program coordinators.
Bridget Colton stepped up beside me, holding a clipboard with a proud, knowing smile.
“The city council just approved our expansion permits for three more residential sites across Reno and Sacramento,” Bridget murmured, leaning in close. “And the state housing commission wants to adopt our trauma-informed architectural blueprint as a mandatory guideline for all public shelters.”

I looked out over the sunlit courtyard, feeling a profound surge of satisfaction. Every wall, every reinforced entryway, and every open, light-filled window represented safety and a fresh start.
“Make sure the accessibility features are prioritized in the Sacramento build, Bridget,” I instructed softly. “We build for everyone who needs a fortress.”
