Chapter 8 - The Family Tribunal

The digital storm broke on Thursday morning—less than forty-eight hours after my mother’s arrest.
I was in the kitchen sterilizing pump parts when my phone began vibrating continuously on the marble island. Call after call, text after text, pinging with relentless fury.
Aunt Brenda: Answer your phone right now!
Uncle Greg: What kind of monster calls the cops on her own mother?
Cousin Derek: You’ve officially crossed the line, Jocelyn. Unbelievable.
They had formed a digital firing squad, mobilizing the entire extended family to bombard me with messages accusing me of elder abuse, heartlessness, and unforgivable cruelty.
I didn't answer a single call. Instead, I poured a cup of coffee, walked over to my laptop, and opened a blank document.
It was time to issue a blanket statement—not to apologize, but to draw a permanent, blazing line in the sand.
I typed out a single, comprehensive message and posted it to my private social media channels, tagging every single member of the extended family who had participated in the pile-on:
> To anyone texting or calling me with opinions about my household:
> My mother broke into my home using a stolen key, lied to my sister to orchestrate an uninvited six-person move-in, and harassed me while I am eight days postpartum and recovering from major surgery. She was arrested for trespassing. Furthermore, my doors are closed to anyone who believes my home belongs to the collective rather than the homeowner.
> If you contact me or my sister to harass us further regarding this matter, you will be blocked permanently. Do not show up at my address.
> Jocelyn.
Within three minutes of hitting ‘Post,’ my phone screen went entirely dead silent.

The shock value of absolute, unapologetic truth was apparently a language they weren't equipped to translate.
