Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Gasps erupted from the driveway.

My stepfather dropped his duffel bag onto the grass, stepping forward with his hands up. “Wait, officer, hold on a second! She’s an old woman, you can’t arrest her for a family dispute—”

“Sir, step back from the porch or you’ll be joining her in the back of my cruiser for obstruction,” Deputy Miller warned, his tone dropping into absolute authority.

Mom didn't fight the cuffs, but as the cold metal clicked around her wrists, she glared up at me with eyes full of pure hatred.

“You’re calling the cops on your own mother?” Mom spat, her voice shaking with rage as Deputy Miller guided her down the front steps. “Over a key?! You’ll regret this, Jocelyn! You’ll never see me again, and don't you dare ever ask me for a single favor!”

“Promise?” I replied coldly.

The word hung in the air like a guillotine blade dropping.

Mom was led away and placed firmly into the backseat of the patrol car. My stepfather hurried over to speak through the cracked window, looking entirely panicked as he realized his free ride and housing plan had just imploded in real time.

Out in the driveway, Krista stood frozen beside her minivan, her three kids peering wide-eyed through the back windows.

Pete walked up slowly to the bottom of my porch steps, looking exhausted, defeated, and deeply ashamed.

“Jocelyn... I am so, so sorry,” Pete muttered, running a hand over his face. “We honestly didn't know. Linda told us you bought this place specifically so the whole family could live together under one roof. She showed us a floor plan she drew herself.”

I stared at him, my heart aching slightly for my sister and her kids, but knowing I couldn't allow myself to bend. If I let them stay out of pity, the toxic cycle would only tighten its grip around my newborn daughter's life.

“Pete, I love you guys. But you can't just blindly trust whatever Mom says without checking with me,” I said softly, leaning against the porch railing. “You guys need to go home. Unpack your things. You can't live here.”

Krista walked up, her cheeks stained with tears. “Where are we supposed to go, Jocelyn? Our lease ended yesterday. Mom told us to put all our remaining boxes into storage and bring the rest straight here.”

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together in my head with terrifying clarity.

Mom hadn't just tried to move-in on a whim. She had orchestrated an entire forced migration, engineering Krista’s homelessness so she would have no choice but to rely entirely on Mom’s control inside my house.

“She made you end your lease?” I whispered.

Krista nodded miserably, wiping her nose with a sleeve. “She said it was part of her master plan for the family estate. She promised everything was settled with you.”

I looked at my sister, then at the patrol car where my mother sat glaring out the window, and finally down at the quiet, peaceful front door of my home.

The audit of my family was complete. The liabilities had shown their true colors. And for the first time in my life, the locks were finally secure.
