Chapter 7 - A Temporary Refuge

By noon, the driveway was finally clear.

My stepfather had driven off behind the police cruiser to figure out bail, and Krista and Pete, realizing they had nowhere else to turn, reluctantly drove their minivan to a cheap budget motel off the interstate—using fifty dollars I quietly Venmo-ed to Pete with strict instructions that it was for food and a single night’s shelter, not a permanent solution.

I locked the front door behind them, checked the deadbolts one more time, and walked upstairs to the nursery.

Clara was awake, cooing softly in her bassinet. I scooped her up into my arms, burying my face against her warm, sweet-smelling neck as a few hot, exhausted tears finally slipped down my cheeks.

It was over for today. The immediate threat had been neutralized.

But as I sat down in the rocking chair to nurse her, a cold realization settled into my bones. My mother wasn't going to let this go. Arresting her for trespassing would only feed her twisted narrative that I was an ungrateful, malicious daughter who needed to be punished.

My phone buzzed on the side table.

It was a text message from an unknown number. I opened it cautiously:

> You think putting your own mother in handcuffs makes you tough, Jocelyn? Wait until the rest of the family hears how you threw your sister and her kids onto the street. You’re entirely alone.

I stared at the screen. It was from my aunt Brenda—my mother’s younger sister, who lived two hours away and had spent decades acting as my mother’s chief flying monkey.

Instead of panicking, I felt a strange, cold clarity wash over me.

For thirty years, my family had operated like an organized crime syndicate disguised as a domestic unit, where guilt was the currency, boundaries were treated as crimes, and silence was demanded for survival.

I didn't reply to Aunt Brenda. I simply tapped Block Contact, deleted the thread, and turned off my phone’s notification sound.
