Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

By mid-morning, the illusion of family loyalty completely fractured into a tactical blame game.
My father, Donald, finally dragged his defeated frame inside the house, smelling faintly of desert dust and stale sweat. He marched straight into the great room where I was reviewing architectural blueprints on my tablet, his face twisted into a mask of desperate, cornered fury.
“You ruined my life!” Donald roared, slamming his palm down onto the glass coffee table so hard the water glasses rattled. “I gave you life! I raised you! I let you live on this property!”
I didn't even look up from my tablet. I slowly swiped to the next architectural schematic, zooming in on the structural load-bearing calculations for the guesthouse.
“You let me live on this property?” I repeated, my voice dangerously calm. “Dad, let’s clear up a fundamental delusion before your blood pressure finishes the job your temper started. This land was a tax-defaulted foreclosure. I bought it when I was twenty-eight using my own engineering severance package and a bank loan you refused to co-sign because you thought I was wasting my time on a ‘worthless desert pit.’”
I finally looked up, locking eyes with him.
“You have never owned a single square inch of this compound. Not a brick, not a wire, not a drop of water in that pool. You are a guest who overstayed his welcome by roughly forty years.”
“I’m your father!” he screamed, his voice cracking hysterically.
“Right now, you’re a trespasser,” I replied, tapping the smart-home panel on the wall behind me. “And unless you and Mom are packed and off my property by noon, I’m calling Deputy Miller from the county sheriff’s office to escort you out in the exact same silver bracelets you thought you’d never wear.”
Donald’s chest heaved. He stared at me with pure, unadulterated venom, realizing that every pillar of authority he had manufactured over a lifetime had dissolved into thin air.

He didn't argue anymore. He turned on his heel, cursed under his breath, and stormed toward the guest suite to collect his things.
