Chapter 19 - The Open Gate

On a warm Saturday morning in late April, the electronic chime at the front gate rang out.

I looked up from my computer monitor and checked the security monitor. A sleek, mud-splattered Jeep sat idling by the courtyard fountain. Marla hopped out of the driver's side, balancing two boxes of artisanal tacos in one hand and a bottle of sparkling cider in the other, while Drew stepped out of the passenger side carrying a portable sound system.

I walked out onto the veranda, unlocking the gate with a tap on my phone screen.

“Special delivery for the architect laureate of the wasteland!” Marla called out brightly as she marched up the flagstone steps, her desert boots clicking rhythmically against the stone.

“You guys didn't have to bring lunch,” I laughed, opening the door wide to welcome them into the cool, sunlit great room.

“We didn't,” Drew grinned, setting the speakers down by the kitchen island. “We wanted to celebrate. Today marks exactly six months since you checked out of the hospital and decided to burn your family’s illusions to the ground.”

We gathered around the large wooden dining table, sharing food, laughter, and stories about the future. There were no whispered secrets, no walking on eggshells, and no performative perfection. Just honest people enjoying an afternoon in a space built on truth and mutual respect.
