Chapter 19 - The Anniversary Dinner

October rolled in with a crisp breeze that turned the maples along Grandma’s street into blazing arches of scarlet and gold.

It was October 12th—the exact fifty-eighth anniversary of the day my grandparents had originally planned to board their flight to California in 1968.

Instead of sitting at home in quiet remembrance, we turned the day into a celebration.

My uncle David flew in from San Francisco for a quick weekend visit, and Captain Miller managed to schedule a layover that landed him at O’Hare just in time for dinner.

We gathered around the dining table in Grandma’s kitchen—a table now crowded with laughter, roasted chicken, and the warm apple pie Grandma had baked that morning.

There was no sadness in the room. Only the vibrant, electric hum of family.

As we raised our glasses of sparkling cider in a toast, Captain Miller stood up at the head of the table.

“To Mom,” he said, looking around the room with a proud, warm smile. “Who taught us that promises are meant to be kept, no matter how long the flight takes.”

“To Mom,” David echoed, raising his glass higher.

And as Grandma smiled back at her sons, her hand resting comfortably over mine on the wooden table, I looked up at the framed photograph hanging in the hallway—Arthur and Margaret, smiling side-by-side, finally looking out at a horizon without limits.
