Chapter 13 - The Packing and the Relics

By late afternoon, the reality of our impending departure began to settle over the cabin.

We returned to the rental house to pack our suitcases. The rooms that had felt so full of life and laughter over the last two days suddenly grew quiet as we zipped up duffels and checked the drawers for stray items.

I was folding my sweaters in the bedroom when Grandma called my name from the living room.

“Kate? Could you come here for a moment, sweetheart?”

I walked into the living room. Grandma was sitting at the wooden dining table, her battered brown leather purse resting open before her. Next to it lay the vintage boarding pass for seat 34A, along with the tiny set of silver pilot wings she had unpinned from the purse the evening before.

She looked up at me, sliding a small, neatly folded envelope across the wooden table.

“What’s this?” I asked, picking it up.

“It’s for you,” Grandma said softly. “Open it.”

I carefully slid my finger under the paper flap and pulled out a handwritten letter, penned in Grandma’s neat, elegant cursive script, alongside an old black-and-white photograph of my grandfather and grandmother standing outside an old airport hangar in their youth.

> “Dearest Kate,

> If you are reading this, it means the journey is over, but our story is just beginning. You spent your hard-earned savings to buy an old woman a first-class ticket because you wanted to give me comfort. But you gave me something much greater than comfort—you gave me closure, and you let me walk hand-in-hand with a ghost who had waited fifty-eight years for his flight.

> Keep these wings, sweetheart. They belong to someone who knows how important it is to choose the right seat, and to never, ever let go of a promise.”

My vision blurred instantly with hot, thick tears. I walked around the table and knelt beside her chair, wrapping my arms tightly around her frail shoulders.

“Thank you, Grandma,” I choked out. “Thank you for bringing me along on your journey.”

“I couldn't have done it without my favorite co-pilot,” she whispered, kissing the top of my head.
