Chapter 14 - The Flight Home

The flight back from Sacramento to Chicago O’Hare was entirely different from our journey west.
There was no nervous tension, no hidden secrets, and no heavy anticipation. Instead, the cabin of Flight 1403 felt warm, peaceful, and familiar.
This time, when we checked in at the gate, my uncle Captain Miller had used his airline privileges to secure a quiet row near the front of the economy cabin for all three of us—Grandma, David, and myself—while he headed up to the cockpit to pilot the evening red-eye back to the Midwest.
Grandma sat comfortably by the window once again, though this time it was seat 12A instead of 34A.
As the jet engines roared to life and the aircraft surged down the runway, lifting off smoothly into the velvet-dark California night, Grandma turned away from the window and smiled at me across the aisle.
Over the intercom, a familiar, deep, and steady voice echoed through the cabin speakers.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. On behalf of our flight crew and my personal co-pilots down in the cabin, welcome aboard Flight 1403 bound for Chicago. We’ve got a smooth tailwind tonight, clear skies ahead, and a very special passenger on board who is finally heading home with a full heart. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight.”
Grandma smiled proudly, resting her hand over her worn leather purse tucked safely beneath the seat in front of her.
David reached across the aisle, squeezing her other hand.

I leaned my head back against the headrest, closing my eyes as the gentle hum of the jet engines vibrated through the floorboards. The journey was coming to its natural close, but the warmth of the skies would stay with us forever.
