Chapter 18 - The Art of the Weekend

By Friday evening, the autumn air had grown brisk, carrying the unmistakable scent of approaching winter over the Manhattan skyline.
I left Beaumont & Hart headquarters at precisely 5:00 p.m., leaving the corporate empire humming smoothly under David Higgins and Marcus Sterling’s watchful eyes.
When my car pulled up outside my Greenwich Village townhouse, the evening felt warmer and cozier than ever. The radiator hummed its familiar song, and the kitchen table was quiet and clean.
I spent the evening cooking a simple meal, listening to the soft rustle of leaves outside my courtyard window, and reflecting on the journey that had brought me here.
Later, I sat out on the front steps with a mug of chamomile tea.
The neighborhood was quiet. The maple trees had shed their final golden leaves, leaving stark, elegant branches silhouetted against the starlit sky.
My phone buzzed on the wooden railing.
It was a text message from Arthur:
> Checked the retail housing grant report tonight. My late wife would have been proud of what you've done with the company, Claire. Have a wonderful weekend.
I smiled softly, locked the phone, and set it down.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't looking over my shoulder, waiting for the next shoe to drop or bracing for the next insult from a family that measured human worth by bank accounts.
