Chapter 13 - Clearing the Ledger

Silence hung in the kitchen for a long moment, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator.

I looked at my former father-in-law—not with anger or bitterness anymore, but with a strange, detached clarity. The resentment I had carried for years had required energy to maintain, and suddenly, I realized I didn't have any left to spend on past grudges.

“I don’t want an apology, Arthur,” I said quietly, walking over to sit at the table opposite him. “And I’m not going to undo the board’s decisions. Beaumont & Hart is running cleanly now, and it’s going to stay that way.”

Arthur nodded slowly, looking down at his hands. “I don't expect you to change anything. David Higgins told me about the new retail worker profit-sharing programs and the supply chain reforms. You’re running the company with a heart I never had.”

“Business isn’t just about crushing competitors, Arthur,” I said softly. “It’s about building something sustainable. Something that doesn't collapse the moment pressure hits.”

He looked up, offering a tired, self-deprecating smile. “You are a much better leader than my son ever hoped to be. The company is in the right hands, Claire.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I replied.

We sat in quiet understanding for a few moments longer before he stood up, leaning on his cane, and walked toward the door. The cycle of old family tyranny had finally been broken.
