Chapter 20 - Anchored in Truth

That evening, back at the house on Maple Lane, the kitchen smelled of roasted garlic, fresh coffee, and spring flowers blooming in the garden outside.

There were no silver candelabras, no tense silences, and no hidden agendas waiting in the dark. Just a simple dinner cooked by two people who had learned the hard way what it means to build a life on solid ground.

As we sat at the kitchen table eating dinner, Dad looked over at me with a thoughtful expression.

“You know, Lauri,” Dad said softly, “when you walked into that dining room in your dress uniform last Thanksgiving, I thought my world was ending.”

I set down my fork, looking across the table at the man who had taught me how to weather every storm that life threw our way.

“It wasn't an ending, Dad,” I replied, my voice steady and clear. “It was just the moment the foundation finally stopped shifting.”

Dad raised his glass of iced tea, a proud, unbroken smile lighting up his face.

“To new anchors,” he toasted.

I raised my glass to meet his, the crystal ringing out clear and true in the quiet, peaceful kitchen.

“To new anchors,” I answered.

And for the first time in my life, every single door ahead of me was wide open, and every key was safely in my own hand.
