Chapter 18 - Ports of Call

The remainder of the Mediterranean rotation was a blur of high-tempo operations, strategic port visits, and multinational naval exercises.

We docked in Souda Bay in Crete, dropped anchor off the coast of Italy, and conducted joint logistics drills with allied fleets. My days were filled with cargo manifests, fuel allocations, and coordinating supply chains across three different time zones. I thrived in the rhythm of it—the constant demand for clarity, accountability, and precision.

During a quiet evening off-duty in Naples, I sat at an outdoor café overlooking the harbor, sipping a dark espresso and watching the sun set behind Mount Vesuvius.

My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket—a roaming notification connecting to local cellular towers.

I pulled it out, half-expecting another desperate text from an unknown number or a notification from a debt collector. Instead, my screen displayed a clean, quiet interface. No missed calls from Melissa. No emotional outbursts from my mother.

Just a calendar reminder synced to my corporate account: Horizon Coastal Holdings LLC – Q4 Property Audit complete. All accounts green.

I smiled, locking the screen and sliding the phone back into my pocket.

For thirty-four years, I had believed that my value as a person was tied to how much I could endure, how much I could finance, and how heavily I could compromise my own boundaries to keep everyone else comfortable. Standing here in Italy, surrounded by centuries of history built on stone, marble, and unyielding foundations, I realized how absurd that belief had been.
