Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

Sunday evening arrived with the quiet, reflective beauty of a weekend well spent.

I stood on the front porch of Maple Lane, watching the autumn dusk settle over the neighborhood. The air smelled of woodsmoke and damp earth. My Navy dress uniform was hanging neatly in the guest room closet, pressed and ready for the Monday morning drive back to base.

My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket.

It was a text message from an unknown number—or rather, a number I hadn't saved, though I recognized the local area code immediately.

> Lauren, please. Brad lost his car today. We’re staying at a budget motel off Route 9. Mom hasn't eaten since yesterday. Can’t you just talk to the bank? Just one word from you and they’d drop the lien.

I stared at the screen for ten seconds. No anger. No satisfaction. Just the quiet realization of how heavy life becomes when you spend it carrying people who refuse to learn how to swim.

I didn't call. I didn't yell.

I simply tapped my screen, selected Block Contact, and watched the message vanish into the ether.

I slipped my phone back into my pocket, turned around, and pushed open the front door. Inside, the radio was playing softly, and the smell of coffee drifted from the kitchen where my father was waiting.

The storm had passed. The ship was steady. And the horizon ahead belonged entirely to us.
