Chapter 8 - The Cornered Executive

At 2:00 PM, Victor Vance walked into my corner office.

He was a tall, distinguished man in his late fifties with silver hair, impeccably tailored Italian suits, and an air of quiet, aristocratic confidence. He carried a sleek leather portfolio under his arm.

“Eleanor,” Victor said, offering a warm, paternal smile as he took a seat across from my desk. “You’re looking vibrant today. How is the baby holding up under all this pressure?”

“She’s kicking, Victor,” I replied smoothly, leaning back in my executive chair. “She knows her mother is busy clearing out the trash.”

Victor’s smile wavered for a fraction of a second, but he recovered instantly. “A necessary process. What Caleb did was an absolute disgrace to the Vance family name. My brother—Caleb’s father—is mortified. We completely support your decision to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.”

“That’s very noble of you, Victor,” I said, resting my hands on my belly. “Especially considering that seventeen percent of Cross Freight Logistics was registered under an offshore holding account owned by your private trust.”

The quiet in the office became deafening.

The soft hum of the air conditioning seemed to vanish. Victor’s hands stayed flat on his leather portfolio, but the color slowly drained from his lips.

“I beg your pardon?” Victor said, his tone dropping an octave, losing its warm paternal velvet.

“Liechtenstein account number 884-Bravo,” I said, reading directly from the paper Mr. Harlan had handed me an hour earlier. “Forty million dollars transferred from our Hamburg shipping terminal funds over eighteen months. Authorized using your private cryptographic key.”

Victor looked at me, his eyes narrowing into cold, sharp slits. The friendly senior executive was gone; the real predator had finally revealed himself.

“You’re playing a dangerous game, Eleanor,” Victor said softly, leaning over my desk. “Your father was a giant. You are an eight-months-pregnant girl sitting in a chair that’s too big for you. You think pulling down Caleb makes you untouchable? If that Liechtenstein file goes to the SEC, Sterling Global’s European licenses will be suspended for ninety days. Our stock will collapse by forty percent.”

“Then we will absorb the loss,” I replied without a single second of hesitation.

“You’ll destroy the company your father died building!” Victor snapped, his voice rising in anger.

“No, Victor,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “I will burn down any part of this company that has been rotted by men like you, and I will build something clean on the ashes.”

Victor stared at me, his jaw working violently as he realized that threats, market pressure, and emotional manipulation were entirely useless against me.

Before he could speak, the heavy oak doors of my office opened.

Two federal investigators from the Financial Crimes Division stepped inside, accompanied by Mr. Harlan.

“Victor Vance?” the lead agent announced. “We have a federal warrant for your arrest regarding international securities fraud, tax evasion, and grand larceny.”

Victor stood up slowly. He didn't scream like his nephew had in the cathedral. He simply smoothed his tie, looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred, and murmured, “Arthur raised a viper.”

May you like

“No,” I whispered as the agents handcuffed him behind his back. “He raised his successor.”
