Chapter 3 - The Audit Begins

Caleb’s breathing was fast and shallow. The arrogant, untouchable predator who had walked into the chapel twenty minutes ago was completely gone. In his place stood a desperate man watching his entire life unravel in front of the most powerful people in the state.

“Read the addendum, Mr. Harlan,” I commanded quietly.

Mr. Harlan turned the page.

“Caleb,” he read, “over the past two years, you served as the Head of Procurement for Sterling Global’s North American division. You believed your position gave you the authority to sign secondary vendor contracts without executive oversight. Specifically, you signed exclusive logistics leases with 'Cross Freight Logistics'—a firm registered under Vanessa Cross’s maiden name.”

Vanessa let out a small, terrified shriek. She dropped her bottle of water, the glass shattering against the marble floor, water pooling around her designer shoes.

“You funneled twelve million dollars of Sterling Global capital into this shell entity,” Mr. Harlan continued, his voice echoing sharply. “You believed those transactions were buried in our secondary ledgers. However, four days ago, a forensic audit was completed by the Federal Securities Commission at my personal request.”

Caleb’s face went from crimson to ash-white. His hands began to shake violently.

“No...” Caleb whispered. “No, no, no. He couldn't... he didn't have the audit reports...”

“The forensic audit, along with wire transfer logs, forged signature proofs, and lease agreements for Miss Cross’s Midtown penthouse, have been compiled into a master evidentiary file,” Mr. Harlan read. “As of 8:00 AM this morning, that file was placed on the desk of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.”

The chapel was so quiet you could hear the rain tapping against the high stained-glass windows.

Caleb turned to look at the back of the cathedral.

The four tall men in charcoal suits—the ones he had assumed were private estate security—were walking slowly down the center aisle. One of them pulled a leather badge from his breast pocket, while the man beside him unclipped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Caleb Vance?” the lead federal agent called out, his voice booming through the cathedral. “I am Special Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and interstate money laundering.”

Vanessa shrieked, backing away from Caleb as if he were covered in poison. “I had nothing to do with it! He told me the money was his! He said it was his corporate bonus!”

“Miss Cross,” the second agent said calmly, stepping around her. “You are also named as a co-conspirator in the federal indictment. You’re coming with us.”

“No! Caleb, do something!” Vanessa screamed, kicking her heels against the floor as the agent grabbed her wrists, pulling her arms behind her back. “You said she was worthless! You said she was just a stupid pregnant woman!”

Caleb didn't answer her. He didn't even look at her. His eyes were locked on me as Special Agent Miller pulled his arms behind his back, the cold steel of the handcuffs clicking sharply into place around his wrists.

The sound echoed off my father's coffin like a final, decisive gavel strike.

Caleb’s voice trembled, his arrogance completely shattered. “Eleanor... please. Talk to them. Tell them it’s a family misunderstanding. We can fix this! Think about the baby! She needs her father!”

I looked down at his cuffed hands, then lifted my gaze to meet his eyes.

“My daughter will know who her grandfather was,” I said, every word dripping with absolute ice. “And she will know that her mother built an empire while her father served time in a federal prison.”

Agent Miller yanked Caleb around. “Let’s go, Vance.”

As the agents dragged Caleb and a sobbing Vanessa down the center aisle, past three hundred staring, disgusted guests, Caleb turned his head one last time, shouting my name into the cold, empty air of the chapel.

I didn't watch him leave.

I turned back to my father’s coffin, laid my hand gently against the dark polished mahogany, and whispered, Thank you, Dad.
