Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

Spring arrived in the Hudson Valley with an explosion of vibrant green grass, blooming white cherry blossoms, and warm, gentle sunlight.

On Maya’s second birthday, we hosted a quiet, beautiful gathering on the south lawn of the estate.

Instead of corporate galas or political dinners, the lawn was filled with the families of Sterling Global’s longest-serving employees, the medical staff from the pediatric oncology research wings we funded, and close personal friends who had stood by my father and me through the darkest hours.

A brand-new timber-framed gazebo stood at the edge of the rose garden, built in memory of my mother and father.

I stood near the stone steps wearing a simple cream silk dress, watching Maya run freely across the grass with a group of children, her bright, joyful laughter ringing through the afternoon air.

Dr. Sarah Lin walked over, holding a glass of sparkling water, and stood beside me looking out at the sunlit estate.

“The Q1 foundation report just cleared the board, Eleanor,” Sarah said warmly. “We’ve officially funded three hundred full medical scholarships for young women from underprivileged backgrounds pursuing careers in pediatric medicine and corporate law.”

I looked at my daughter, who was proudly showing a bright yellow dandelion to Mr. Harlan.

“That’s the real empire, Sarah,” I spoke softly, feeling a profound sense of warmth fill my chest. “Not just shipping containers, real estate portfolios, or stock tickers. It’s creating a world where young women never have to feel helpless, vulnerable, or unprotected when wolves come to their door.”

“Arthur would be beaming if he were here today, Eleanor,” Sarah said gently, squeezing my hand.

“He is here,” I whispered, looking up at the clear blue sky above the estate. “He’s in every corner of this place.”
